In the supermarkets the more exotic mushroom varieties can be very expensive, and growing your own (like all home garden production) offers an excellent way to save money.
Why Grow Your Own Mushrooms?
The market for speciality mushrooms is rapidly growing due to increasing interest in their culinary, nutritional and perceived health/medicinal benefits. The types of mushroom on offer are not widely available in supermarkets and very expensive when they are actually available. Growing your own is a much safer than risking misidentification when picking from the wild and much more productive. Mushrooms are the number one recyclers on the planet and are therefore important to cycle nutrients that nourish the life in the soil/garden.
Why Mr Fothergill's Seeds Mushrooms?
Mushroom spawn is a living organism which requires a different approach compared to plant seed. We will use a supplier that provides us with patented packaging that won a DTI SMART Award for Innovation in mushroom storage and end-user packaging. This polypropylene breathable bag has a shelf life of 12 months. All spawn is packed to the highest standards in a sterile environment using a class100 clean-room technology. All spawn supplied has 100% traceability throughout the production process. Production process has been certified ORGANIC by the soil association.

Grown on wood logs.
A wonderful native British mushroom, traditionally a favourite amongst woodsmen who have picked and appreciated them for centuries. It has a luxurious taste and texture of lobster when cooked, making it very popular with gourmet chefs around the world. Lion's Mane mushrooms are suitable to grow on most English hardwood trees and also on fruit trees such as apple, pear and walnut. Logs crop for several years. 30 plugs

One of Europes favourite wild mushrooms the Pearl Oyster has been sought out by those in the know for centuries. The name comes from the wonderfully ruffled cap. It has a mild, refined flavour and a velvety texture, the perfect compliment to chicken pork and seafood dishes or just fried with salt and pepper and enjoyed on toast. Best cooked simply and quickly especially when they are home-grown fresh.
Oyster mushrooms like to grow on all hardwoods, which most English native trees are (avoid conifers and fruit trees). The mushroom crops generally appear in the autumn and winter months and can produce several crops in a year. The mushroom logs will then produce Oyster mushroom crops for several years and can be quite prolific. 30 plugs

The beautiful Pink Oyster Mushroom is the firmest of the Oyster varieties, with an almost meaty texture and a rich aromatic flavour. Superb grilled or fried with a little seasoning and best served with light meats such as chicken, pork or seafood.

Shiitake Mushrooms are believed in many cultures to have an array of health promoting and immunity boosting properties. This is just one of the reasons why these mushrooms have been grown and treasured in South-East Asia for centuries.
It has a subtle but distinctive smokey flavour and a firm texture perfectly suited to slow cooking, frying or grilling. Before cooking, just remove any hard parts of the stem and cut into slices if desired.
Shiitake like to grow on all hardwoods, which most English native trees are (avoid conifers and fruit trees). It may take up to 12 months for the first mushroom crop to appear, generally during the Spring and Summer months. Patience is handsomely rewarded as the mushroom logs will then produce for several years, sometimes as many as 4 times in a year if growing on oak. 30 plugs

The Enoki Mushroom is incredibly popular in the East for its mild, light, almost fruity flavour and good firm texture . Fabulous when just lightly cooked in soups, stir fries, with vegetables or chicken dishes and is often eaten raw in salads or as a garnish. Famous for its many reported health benefits it is a variety well worth growing.
Enoki like to grow on all paper barked hardwood trees, which English native trees such as Birch or sycamore are (avoid conifers and fruit trees). The mushroom crops generally appear from November to April and 2 crops can be produced during this time. The mushroom logs will then produce Enoki crops for several years. 30 plugs
