Green Manure: Alfalfa Green Manure: Alfalfa
Medicago sativa. Deep rooting plants improve the structure of the subsoil. Can be grown for a few months or left for up to two years. Sow by broadcasting seed from April to July. Grows to about 1m high and is winter hardy. Pack for 40 sq.m. 80gms

Best sown throughout the autumn for cutting July onwards. Grain highly nutritious and straw very useful as small animal feed or for mulching.

Fagopyrum esculentum. Deep rooting to break up subsoils and makes a lot of growth to increase humus content. Added benefit of attracting hoverflies which will feed on greenfly in the garden. Broadcast seed from March to August. Dig or rotivate in before frosts for humus improvement. Pack for 15 sq.m. 150gms

Trifolium uincarnatum. Best for sandy soils to add humus. Fixes nitrogen. Very attractive to bees if left to flower. Broadcast seed from March to June for digging before flowering or July and August for digging in during the spring. Pack for 30 sq.m. 90gms

Secale cereale. The most important green manure for improving soil struxture. Slightly hard work to dig in, but soil improvement is well worthwhile. Needs a few months to rot down. 150g

Trigonella foenum graecum. Grown mostly for the amount of material it produces to increase humus content. Broadcast seed from March to August and dig in before flowering. Quick into growth to suppress weeds but slower to flower than Mustard. Pack for 15 sq.m. 60gms

Vicia faba. Nitrogen fixing specie sown in rows 20cm apart with about 10cm between seeds.Winter hardy from sowing in September to November. Dig in during early spring before flowering. Pack for 6 sq.m. 150gms

Lupinus angustufolius. Very deep rooting for soil improvement and fixes nitrogen. Sow from March to June 4cm deep in rows 15cm apart with 2-3cm between plants. Slow starter and takes 2-3 months to reach digging stage before flowering. Pack for 20 sq.m. 110gms

Sinapsis alba. One of the fastest growing of green manures. It is susceptible to clubroot so do not use where this is a problem. Sow by broadcasting seeds from March to early September. Dig in before flowering which can be as little as 3-4 weeks to add humus to the soil. Pack for 25 sq.m. 120gms

Phacelia tanacetifolia. Quick to start up and suppress weeds, winter hardy so can be sown in autumn for spring digging in. Adds humus content to soil. Broadcast seed from March to September. Early sowings should be dug in after 2 months before flowering.Pack for 25 sq.m. 60gms

A very high protein grain which is already starting to appear in Health food products. Quinoa will grow to over 2 mtrs in good soil and produces in September the most spectacular heads of all different colours purple - pink - green - cream - gold - ochre.

Vicia sativa. An annual fast growing vetch once established. Fixes nitrogen and is winter hardy. For the best weed suppression mix with Rye and broadcast seed, raking well afterwards, from March to May for digging in after about 2 months or July to September for diggin. 150gms
